A blocking group is four types built from two dual dyads drawn from opposing quadras. That is one word away from the relaxation group, which is two dual dyads drawn from adjacent quadras, and the one word does all the work. Between them the two groupings exhaust the ways of putting two dual dyads in a room, which is why this page exists: the set was incomplete without it.
Everyone in a blocking group has their dual present, exactly as in a relaxation group, so the raw ingredients look promising. What you get instead is a room where nothing happens, and the reason is not that the people are lazy. It is structural, it is the same in all four groups, and it is the cleanest case on this site of a small group's behaviour falling directly out of Model A.
How the four groups are derived
Two dichotomies produce all four, the same way two produce the relaxation groups. The first is Aristocrat against Democrat, which is a question of whether a type reads people as individuals or through the groups they belong to. Alpha and Gamma are the democratic quadras and hold the Researcher and Socializer clubs between them; Beta and Delta are the aristocratic ones and hold the Pragmatists and Humanitarians. The second is Rational against Irrational, the same tempo axis the temperaments run on.
Cross them and you get four cells of four types, and every cell turns out to be two dual dyads from a pair of opposing quadras. That is not obvious from the dichotomies and it is worth checking rather than believing, which is why the membership on this page is derived from the function stacks and tested against the relations table rather than typed out.
The relation profile, and the contact map that explains it
Every blocking group holds the same six relations: two Dual, two Extinguishment and two Super-ego. Unlike the relaxation groups, whose profile splits by tempo, this one is uniform across all four.
Read it against Model A and something falls out that no other small group on this site produces. Duality puts the partner's leading function on your Suggestive fifth and their creative on your Mobilising sixth. Extinguishment puts theirs on your Ignoring seventh and Demonstrative eighth. Super-ego puts an entire Ego block onto your Role third and Vulnerable fourth. Add the three partners together and your six points of contact land on positions three, four, five, six, seven and eight, once each: every position except your own Ego block, nothing doubled and nothing missed.
Set that beside the two groupings it is most often confused with, and the contrast is the whole argument.

So the blocking group is the balanced case, and balance here is not a virtue. Your dual supplies the two functions you cannot supply yourself, which is why the room feels easy and why nobody wants to leave. Your super-ego partner has their whole conscious apparatus pointed at the two functions you defend, which means anything the group might actually decide to do runs into a wall the moment it is proposed. And your extinguishment partner is operating entirely on functions you are strong in and do not value, so they neither ask anything of you nor offer anything you want.
Comfortable, obstructed, and unbothered, all at once. A group in that state does not rest and does not work. It settles.
The Democrat Irrationals
Two dual dyads that take people as individuals rather than as ranks, moving at whatever pace the situation sets. The relations inside it are Dual, Extinguishment and Super-ego, and the two dual pairs are ILE with SEI and ILI with SEE.

What Reinin describes, and what the name is
The grouping and the observation are Grigory Reinin's, from Lecture 8 of his socionics course, on small groups. He gives the relation profile as super-ego, extinguishment and duality, which is what the table above derives independently, and his four membership lists are the four groups above, type for type.
His description is worth having in full because it is unusually concrete. The group's manifestations resemble the relaxation group's, he says, but without the trance. You set them a task, come back ten minutes later, and they are still sitting there: everything is fine, no tasks needed. They lack the impulse to communicate. Responsibility disappears. There is a clear decline in physical, mental and emotional activity.
On the name I have to be straight with you. I am working from a translation, in which the group is called a blocking group or a redemption group, and I have not seen the Russian original of either term. Blocking is the one I have led with because it describes what the structure does and because I can defend it from the contact map. Treat redemption as a label I am passing on rather than one I can account for.
Practical use
The useful thing here is recognition rather than assembly, because almost nobody sets out to build one of these. What they do is inherit one: a committee, a flat share, a long-standing group of four that is perfectly pleasant and has not produced anything in two years.
The tell is the specific combination of comfort and inertia. Nobody wants out, nobody is in conflict, and every proposal quietly evaporates without anyone opposing it. That is not a motivation problem and treating it as one will not help. It is two duals keeping everyone comfortable while two super-ego pairs make every proposal unattractive at the moment it is raised.
The fix is the same shape as the one on the bouquet page and easier, because you are not short of support, you are short of anything that survives contact. Break the super-ego pairings, either by adding a fifth person from one of the two quadras already present, or by splitting the group for the work and reassembling it for the company. A dual dyad on its own is productive. It is the second dyad, imported from the opposing quadra, that cancels it. The group mapper will show you which pairs are doing it.
Honest limits
Small group theory is the least supported layer of socionics on evidence, and this grouping has thinner support than most: one lecture, one set of observations, no sample, no protocol and no replication. Reinin says as much himself about the whole area, noting that most of the thirty-five possible four-type groups have never been studied at all and that no model predicts their properties.
Typing error does the usual damage, and here it is worse than usual, because the group is defined by two dual pairs. Get one member wrong and you have probably destroyed a dual pair, which is the ingredient the entire description depends on. Most groups of four that somebody has identified as a blocking group are not one.
What I will stand behind is the contact map, which is arithmetic rather than observation: positions three to eight, once each, in all four groups. Whether that produces the specific inertia Reinin describes is a separate question, and one nobody has tested. But it does predict that a blocking group will feel supported and act stuck, and that is a sharp enough claim to be worth watching for.
