Argumentation Styles — Socionics Small Groups

Argumentation is the means by which people protect their beliefs or self-interests through rational dialogue. In Socionics, the four Argumentation styles describe how each type characteristically reaches conclusions — whether through restructuring, preserving, constructing, or diplomatically managing.

This is a classical grouping derived directly from the Jungian dichotomies, using the last two letters of the MBTI type code (TP, FJ, TJ, FP) — parallel to Stimulus groups, which use the first two letters.

Restructurers — TP

ILE · SLE · ILI · SLI ENTp · ESTp · INTp · ISTp Debate to restructure

Restructurers reach conclusions through debate and negotiation aimed at changing, altering or restoring the structure of something. Their argumentation is concerned with how things could be reconfigured.

Extroverted Restructurers (ILE, SLE) tend to create something new by remixing existing ideas — following the principle that nothing is truly original, but the way something is presented and assembled can be distinctly their own. A new philosophy, school of thought or business venture built from the parts at hand.

Introverted Restructurers (ILI, SLI) tend to architect something new using existing concepts as raw material. The end result may be only ten percent different from what came before — but that ten percent is what makes it genuinely distinct.

Aushra Augusta (ILE) is the natural example: she took Jung's existing framework, existing ideas about information metabolism, and existing personality research — and restructured them into something that had not existed before.

Guardians — FJ

EIE · ESE · EII · ESI ENFj · ESFj · INFj · ISFj Debate to preserve

Guardians reach conclusions through debate and negotiation aimed at protecting, preserving or watching over something they value. Their argumentation is concerned with maintaining what matters.

Extroverted Guardians (EIE, ESE) bring strong leadership to the table. They can reason a group together by accepting the different roles each person plays in service of a larger purpose. Natural managers and organisers.

Introverted Guardians (EII, ESI) bring strong self-leadership. They work relentlessly and meticulously in support of a cause or group without requiring the spotlight to do so. Valued members rather than figureheads.

Steve Jobs (EIE) fits the Guardian pattern: a forward-thinking person whose argumentation was consistently about preserving a particular vision of how technology should work in people's lives — and defending it against compromise.

Constructors — TJ

LIE · LSE · LII · LSI ENTj · ESTj · INTj · ISTj Debate to construct

Constructors reach conclusions through debate and negotiation aimed at building something — systematically arranging ideas or terms into a coherent structure.

Extroverted Constructors (LIE, LSE) have business-oriented minds with a knack for finding reliable, predictable results. They are natural consultants, inventors and strategists — people who construct solutions designed to produce expected outcomes.

Introverted Constructors (LII, LSI) have logical-analytical minds with a talent for detached appraisal. They are at their best in analyst roles where conditional logic is the primary tool for making sense of a situation and building new lines of thought from it.

Carl Jung (LII) is the archetype here: he built new conceptual frameworks from the ground up, constructing an entire vocabulary for understanding the inner life.

LSE ESTj The Director

LSI ISTj The Inspector

Diplomats — FP

IEE · SEE · IEI · SEI ENFp · ESFp · INFp · ISFp Debate to manage and harmonise

Diplomats reach conclusions through debate and negotiation aimed at managing delicate situations and handling people with care. Their argumentation is less about winning and more about keeping things workable.

Extroverted Diplomats (IEE, SEE) have the outward warmth to meet and engage with new people easily. They tend not to build deeply exclusive relationships — as diplomats, they extend a similar quality of attention to everyone they meet, reserving deeper investment for those who genuinely earn it.

Introverted Diplomats (IEI, SEI) bring an individualistic sincerity to keeping the peace. They connect more through action than through conversation, and approach new people with a quiet awareness that each one represents a new social situation requiring some degree of navigation.

Tom Jones (SEE) is a fitting example: a performer whose entire career has been built on spreading warmth and social ease across a remarkably wide audience.

A note on the relationships between groups

Restructurers are, in a sense, the intellectual beneficiaries of Constructors — they take what was originally built and find new ways to apply or reconfigure it. Guardians are the social benefactors of Diplomats — they formalise and lead the networks that Diplomats establish and maintain.
