The 8 Functions

Socionics builds its 16 types from eight information elements — each one a distinct mode of perceiving or evaluating the world. Every type processes all eight, but in a fixed hierarchy: your leading function shapes how you move through life, your creative function is where you play, and your vulnerable function is where you quietly struggle. Understanding the functions is understanding why types differ not just in what they do, but in how they experience reality.

Extraverted Intuition (Ne)

The function of possibility and connection — scanning for what could exist, what links unexpectedly, and what has not yet been thought. Ne types see potential before others have noticed the gap.

Introverted Sensing (Si)

The function of inner comfort and physical memory — attuned to the body's signals, sensory quality and the feeling of things being right or wrong. Si types notice deterioration and disruption before anyone else complains.

Introverted Intuition (Ni)

The function of trajectory and deep pattern — sensing where things are heading and what underlies appearances. Ni types carry a felt sense of inevitability about the future that is difficult to explain but hard to argue with.

Extraverted Sensing (Se)

The function of presence, force and immediate reality — reading power, space and momentum in the room. Se types act decisively in the moment and find abstract deliberation a poor substitute for direct experience.

Extraverted Logic (Te)

The function of efficiency and practical knowledge — evaluating what works, what wastes time and what gets results. Te types are drawn to facts, methods and the shortest path between problem and outcome.

Introverted Ethics (Fi)

The function of personal values and relational depth — maintaining a private map of who deserves what and why. Fi types feel the moral weight of situations acutely and rarely expose their standards until they are violated.

Introverted Logic (Ti)

The function of internal structure and logical consistency — building frameworks that hold together under scrutiny. Ti types are suspicious of conclusions that cannot be traced back to first principles.

Extraverted Ethics (Fe)

The function of emotional atmosphere and social energy — reading the mood of a group and moving it deliberately. Fe types are natural hosts of collective feeling, whether that means lifting a room or redirecting its tension.
