Socionics Benefit Rings: One Way Round

A benefit ring is the quieter twin of the supervision ring. Four types, a closed chain, one direction: ILE is benefactor to EIE, EIE to SEE, SEE to LSE, and LSE back to ILE. As with supervision, the order is the fact. Reverse a step and you have described a relationship that does not exist.

Both rings are followed out of the relation table and checked against socionics-core on every build, cyclic order included. What the two rings do with that shared shape, though, turns out to be almost exactly opposite, and the difference is not a matter of degree.

Energy carriers Extravert, Result
ESE IEE LIE SLE
Accumulators of information Introvert, Process
SEI LSI ILI EII
Generators of information Introvert, Result
LII SLI ESI IEI
The right extraverts Extravert, Process
ILE EIE SEE LSE

Each arrow runs from benefactor to beneficiary, and the last member of every row hands back to the first.

How the four rings are found

The same walk as the supervision page. Start anywhere, take the type you are benefactor to, repeat, and the chain closes after four steps from wherever you began. Sixteen types, four rings, nothing left over.

The shape it produces is not quite the same shape, and the differences matter.

A benefit ring never changes attitude. All four members are extravert or all four are introvert, from the first step to the last, where a supervision ring alternates at every step. It does still take one type from each quadra and one from each club, and it still walks the quadras either in the order Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta or in reverse, two rings each way.

As in a supervision ring, the two types facing each other across the ring, first against third and second against fourth, are a super-ego pair. Every ring in both systems has that pair of diagonals.

And the four rings pair off by duality. Take any ring and replace every member with their dual, and you get another whole benefit ring, with each dual standing in the same position of it. The energy carriers pair with the generators of information; the accumulators pair with the ring of right extraverts. So the socion's benefit structure is two dual-partnered couples of rings rather than four unrelated loops, which is a fact worth having before any of the interpretation below.

Why nobody notices a benefit relation

Take any of the sixteen benefaction pairs and ask where each partner's Ego block lands in the other's stack. All sixteen give the same answer:

Who is speaking Which function Where it lands in the other
Benefactor Leading the beneficiary's 8th, Demonstrative
Benefactor Creative the beneficiary's 5th, Suggestive
Beneficiary Leading the benefactor's 6th, Mobilising
Beneficiary Creative the benefactor's 7th, Ignoring

Five, six, seven and eight. Every point of contact in a benefaction relation falls in the Super-id and the Id, the unconscious half of Model A, and none of it reaches the Ego or the Super-ego. Supervision is the exact complement, all four of its contacts in positions one to four. The two asymmetric relations split Model A down the middle between them, and that single fact accounts for most of what is said about both.

Here it accounts for the asymmetry itself, which usually gets described and rarely gets explained.

The beneficiary is receiving the benefactor's creative function on their suggestive fifth: the position that duality feeds, the one thing they cannot supply themselves and want supplied. So they get a weak dose of what a dual gives, from somebody who is not a dual and is not aiming it at them. That is the pull, and it is genuinely hard to name from the inside, because nothing conscious is happening.

Meanwhile the benefactor's headline strength, their leading function, is landing on the beneficiary's demonstrative eighth, which the beneficiary already does effortlessly and does not particularly rate. And the reply, the beneficiary's whole leading function, arrives on the benefactor's mobilising sixth: welcome, mildly energising, not needed.

Put those three together and the famous imbalance stops being a personality clash and becomes a wiring diagram. One person is quietly fed in the place they most want feeding. The other is quietly warmed in a place they can live without. Neither of them can point at what is happening, because all of it is below the waterline.

The four rings

Energy carriers

ESE → IEE → LIE → SLE Extravert, Result runs against the quadra cycle

The four extraverts who hold a goal fixed and push at it. In Gulenko's account this is where the socion's push comes from rather than its content. The ring closes from SLE back to ESE.

Type Code Title Quadra Benefits
ESE ESFj The Enthusiast Alpha IEE
IEE ENFp The Psychologist Delta LIE
LIE ENTj The Pioneer Gamma SLE
SLE ESTp The Marshal Beta ESE

Accumulators of information

SEI → LSI → ILI → EII Introvert, Process runs with the quadra cycle

The four introverts who attend to how a thing is done. Gulenko casts them as the socion's store: they take information in and hold it rather than moving it on. The ring closes from EII back to SEI.

Type Code Title Quadra Benefits
SEI ISFp The Mediator Alpha LSI
LSI ISTj The Inspector Beta ILI
ILI INTp The Critic Gamma EII
EII INFj The Humanist Delta SEI

Generators of information

LII → SLI → ESI → IEI Introvert, Result runs against the quadra cycle

The four introverts who work to a finished state. Gulenko casts them as the socion's source of new material, as against the group that stores it. The ring closes from IEI back to LII.

Type Code Title Quadra Benefits
LII INTj The Analyst Alpha SLI
SLI ISTp The Craftsman Delta ESI
ESI ISFj The Guardian Gamma IEI
IEI INFp The Romantic Beta LII

The right extraverts

ILE → EIE → SEE → LSE Extravert, Process runs with the quadra cycle

The four extraverts who attend to how a thing is done. No name for this ring appears in the translation I have, so it is described by what the data says it is rather than given one. The ring closes from LSE back to ILE.

Type Code Title Quadra Benefits
ILE ENTp The Searcher Alpha EIE
EIE ENFj The Actor Beta SEE
SEE ESFp The Ambassador Gamma LSE
LSE ESTj The Director Delta ILE

Gulenko's project and implementation groups

The three names in the rows above are Viktor Gulenko's, from his account of project and implementation groups, and they sit on the benefit rings the way the cognitive styles sit on the supervision rings. As with those, the published memberships were treated here as claims to check rather than as data, and all three match the derived rings exactly.

The labels come with a bracket in the sources: energy carriers are the left extraverts, accumulators of information the right introverts, generators of information the left introverts. Left and right are Gulenko's terms for the trait this site calls Result and Process, and rather than take that mapping on trust I read it off the memberships themselves. Every type in the energy carriers is a Result type, every type in the accumulators is a Process type, and the same holds for the third group, so left means Result and right means Process consistently across all three. That is inference from a correspondence rather than a definition, and I would rather say so than present it as a translation.

Which leaves the fourth ring, ILE, EIE, SEE and LSE, the right extraverts. No name for it appears in any source I have been able to read, and the three named groups do not imply one. Its membership is not in doubt, because it is a ring the relation table produces whether anybody names it or not, and it is also exactly what elimination leaves once the other three are taken out. But a group whose label I would be inventing gets described rather than christened, and the row above says what it is instead of what it is called.

One further thing the dual pairing above makes concrete. The generators of information are dual to the energy carriers, position for position. If you take Gulenko's framing seriously for a moment, the ring that supposedly produces the material and the ring that supposedly carries the push are each other's complements, which is a tidier story than the four labels on their own suggest. I would not lean on it. It is the kind of pattern that is satisfying enough to be worth distrusting.

What this might mean for a team

Lightly, because the evidence will not carry more.

The useful part is not the labels, it is the direction. In any group of four or more there are benefaction steps running through it, and each one is a small persistent slope: one person's attention is drawn slightly up the slope and is not returned in the same measure. Nobody is at fault and nobody can see it happening, which is what makes it worth knowing about. Left alone, it shows up as one person deferring to another's judgement a little more than their record justifies, and as the other wondering why they keep getting asked.

Two things follow that are worth doing. Do not make a benefaction step load-bearing for a decision that needs genuine challenge, because the beneficiary is structurally unlikely to supply it. And when you are the benefactor, take the deference as information about the wiring rather than about the quality of your judgement.

The Group Mapper will show you every asymmetric pair in a real group and which end each person is standing on, which is the practical form of this page. The Benefaction relation page covers the pair on its own.

Honest limits

The rings, the contact map, the attitude, the quadra walk and the dual pairing are all derived from the relation table and re-checked on every build. There is nothing there to take on faith.

The project and implementation layer is a different matter, and thinner even than the cognitive styles are on the supervision page. What exists in English is a handful of translated fragments describing what each group does in the socion, with no protocol, no sample and nothing that would let anybody check whether a group of introverts labelled generators of information generates any more information than anybody else. The names are evocative and evocative is not the same as measured. I have kept them because they are the terms people arrive searching for, and I have tried to keep the description of what they claim separate from the description of what the rings are.

The transmission story is also weaker here than it looks, though for the opposite reason to supervision. On the supervision page the objection is that every step lands on the receiver's weakest point, so what travels is pressure. Here every step lands somewhere the receiver welcomes, which is exactly why a benefit ring makes a plausible circuit, and exactly why nobody inside one can report on it. A mechanism that is invisible to its participants is a difficult thing to gather evidence for, and no one has.

Typing error, as ever, and worse in a chain than in a set: one wrong member breaks the loop rather than blurring it.

The other asymmetric structure is the supervision rings, the same idea run on the relation that lives in the conscious blocks. For the groupings built on sets rather than sequences, start at small groups.

Frequently asked questions

What is a benefit ring in Socionics?

A benefit ring is four types in a closed chain of benefaction: the first is benefactor to the second, the second to the third, the third to the fourth, and the fourth back to the first. Like the supervision rings, its members sit in an order rather than a set. There are four rings covering the sixteen types, and every member of a ring shares the same attitude, all extravert or all introvert.

Which types are in each benefit ring?

ESE benefits IEE, which benefits LIE, which benefits SLE, which benefits ESE. SEI benefits LSI, then ILI, then EII, then back to SEI. LII benefits SLI, then ESI, then IEI, then back to LII. ILE benefits EIE, then SEE, then LSE, then back to ILE.

Why is benefaction so hard to notice?

Because none of it happens in the conscious half of Model A. Every point of contact in a benefaction pair falls in positions five to eight, the Super-id and Id blocks. The benefactor's creative function lands on the beneficiary's suggestive fifth, which is the position a dual feeds, so the beneficiary feels a faint version of duality and cannot say why. The benefactor gets the reply on their mobilising sixth, which is pleasant and not compelling.

What are Gulenko's project and implementation groups?

Four groups Gulenko describes that have the membership of the four benefit rings: energy carriers, accumulators of information, generators of information, and a fourth group. The three named ones are the left extraverts, the right introverts and the left introverts respectively, and the fourth is the right extraverts, ILE, EIE, SEE and LSE. No name for that fourth group appears in the translations available here, so this page describes it rather than inventing one.
