Description

The following description is derived from Working Materials by I. Weisband (1986), translated by D. Lytov and edited by L. Kamensky (2002). It represents one classical perspective on the SLI type.

An iceberg in the ocean. The SLI is obstinate, reclusive, and almost always equally cold and enigmatic. Their movements are quiet, precise, and very economical — others frequently get the impression that their results disproportionately exceed the effort invested. They are characterised by undemonstrative quiet persistence, reliable completion of everything they begin, internal accountability for their actions, and genuine modesty. Like a typical Briton, they make nothing of their work and reveal nothing of their feelings. At first they may seem to do everything coolly, carelessly. But gradually it becomes clear that their unhurriedness reflects their general tempo of life: a combination of relaxation and precision.

Talented laziness. Unlike more restless types, the SLI will scarcely spend energy on futile work. They are a born inventor but do not hurry with the implementation of ideas until conditions for maximum effect have ripened. They take pride in their ability to avoid unnecessary things, and adore comfort and convenience. When performing tasks alongside others, everything tends to drift toward their preferred arrangement without any pressure on their part. All space accessible to them is organised ideally for work and rest. They are an aesthete who trusts their taste completely, dresses neatly and with style — but as a rule without challenging convention.

Reserved richness of emotions. It is precisely the SLI's aptitude for hiding emotion beneath a mask of inapproachability that makes their feelings finely polished and expressive when they do emerge — there are many actors among this type. They remain calm under any circumstances, but calm in a distinctive manner: cold and unapproachable even when in love, and slow to trust the feelings of their somewhat frivolous dual (the IEE). They are very jealous and mistrustful, terrified that their emotions will be ridiculed. In dangerous situations they stubbornly fear nothing and approach the source of danger with great composure — going directly toward the opponent is their best move. The more solitary they are, the more unapproachable they become.

Goals and methods. Without their dual, the SLI can sometimes be mistaken for a lazybones — speaking a great deal and doing little, as if waiting for something. And indeed they are waiting: for a signal that something is needed of them. They will not work without a goal, and are not capable of generating goals themselves. Only the IEE — the ardent enthusiast — holds the key that starts up the precise and flawless mechanism of the Craftsman. As a reward, the SLI takes the joy they have brought through their labour. They judge the sincerity of others by voice inflection, which automatically mobilises them. They do not tolerate equal treatment regardless of contribution — only genuine feeling expressed through eyes and tone of voice can truly win them over.
