Extraverted Sensing (Se) — Socionics Function

Extraverted Sensing (Se) is one of the 8 information elements in Socionics — extroverted, sensing, irrational and perceptive. Se is the Leading function for SLE (The Marshal) and SEE (The Ambassador), and the Creative function for LSI (The Inspector) and ESI (The Guardian).

Se

The perception of power, presence and physical reality in the external world.

Extroverted Sensing Irrational Perceptive

Definitions

Extroverted — primarily concerned with the physical and social environment; oriented outward toward external phenomena.

Sensing — direct, grounded perception of physical reality; concrete facts; the immediate and tangible.

Together, Se is the capacity to perceive the immediate physical and social landscape — who holds power, what is real, what is happening right now, and how to act decisively within it.

In Practice

"Strike while the iron is hot" — Se operates in the present moment and is acutely sensitive to windows of opportunity — delay is loss; the moment to act is now or not at all.

"Actions speak louder than words" — Se evaluates reality by what it can directly observe and act upon. Abstract plans and intentions count for little; concrete results in the physical world are the only valid currency.

"Occupy the space" — a theatrical and athletic concept — Se is the function of physical presence, dominance and the territorial claim. It perceives who is in command of a situation and responds accordingly.

Se is the mirror image of Ni. Where Ni perceives the trajectory of time, Se perceives the texture of the present. It is the most immediate of all functions — registering physical reality, social dominance and sensory data with high fidelity. Strong Se types are acutely aware of their physical environment, respond quickly to what is directly in front of them, and have a natural command of physical and social space. They are energised by challenge, resistance and direct engagement.

Model A Positions

Se appears at a different position in every type's Model A, which determines how consciously and actively it operates.

Conscious · Strong
#1 — Driving Se EGO
SEE (ESFp)  ·  SLE (ESTp)

Direct engagement with the physical and social environment; a commanding presence; attuned to power dynamics; acts on what is immediately real; drawn to challenge and competition; impatient with abstraction.

#2 — Supporting Se EGO
ESI (ISFj)  ·  LSI (ISTj)

Grounding decisions in concrete observable reality; enforcing standards and boundaries with quiet authority; sustaining effort through physical discipline; using tangible facts to justify positions.

Conscious · Weak
#3 — Moralising Se SUPER-EGO
IEE (ENFp)  ·  ILE (ENTp)

Cautiously engaging with physical and social reality; occasionally asserting presence but with uncertainty; aware of power dynamics without fully understanding how to navigate them; prefers ideas to direct confrontation.

#4 — Censoring Se SUPER-EGO
EII (INFj)  ·  LII (INTj)

Uncomfortable with direct assertion or confrontation; avoids occupying dominant social space; tends to retreat from power dynamics; physical reality is processed tentatively and often avoided — the weakest and most uneasy position for Se.

Subconscious · Weak
#5 — Exploring Se SUPER-ID
IEI (INFp)  ·  ILI (INTp)

A subconscious attraction to people with physical confidence and commanding presence; drawn to those who act decisively in the material world; a latent desire for someone to take charge of the physical environment.

#6 — Suggesting Se SUPER-ID
EIE (ENFj)  ·  LIE (ENTj)

A quiet background need for grounding in physical reality; unconsciously expecting others to manage the material world; a deep-rooted desire for an environment of security and tangible certainty.

Subconscious · Strong
#7 — Accumulating Se ID
SEI (ISFp)  ·  SLI (ISTp)

Storing impressions of physical and social reality without actively deploying them; building a dormant map of power dynamics and environmental facts that surfaces under pressure.

#8 — Threatening Se ID
ESE (ESFj)  ·  LSE (ESTj)

Automatic and forceful assertion of physical presence when under pressure; a sudden commanding dominance that emerges in confrontational situations; others may experience this as unexpectedly aggressive from an otherwise controlled type.
