The IEE leads with extraverted intuition (Ne) and the IEI leads with introverted intuition (Ni). Both are intuitive types who are drawn to the inner lives of people and the non-obvious dimension of situations. Ne generates outward: possibilities, connections, enthusiasm for what could be discovered. Ni works inward: depth, emotional trajectories, patience with what is slowly becoming visible. Each type's leading function is the other's seventh, Ignoring function: the IEE's Ne sits seventh in the IEI's stack and the IEI's Ni seventh in the IEE's. Each is capable in the other's leading function but does not value it, and tends to set it aside.
Common friction points
The IEE can find the IEI's interiority genuinely puzzling: all the emotional depth present, but directed inward rather than outward into the shared space where the IEE naturally operates. The IEI can find the IEE's outward pace and enthusiasm somewhat overwhelming: genuine in its warmth, but not providing the quality of still, interior resonance the IEI finds most nourishing.
Both types are strongly people-oriented; the Extinguishment friction arises not from indifference but from a mismatch in which direction that orientation flows. The pairing tends to be cordial and often warm at social distance while producing a specific mutual flatness in sustained close contact.
Where each type's functions land
The opening places each leading function in the other's Ignoring position; the creative functions follow the same pattern one step further. The IEE's Fi is the IEI's Demonstrative Fi, and the IEI's Fe is the IEE's Demonstrative Fe. Each type's whole Ego block, in other words, lands in the other's Id: strong, familiar, and not valued. That is why each can follow the other's thinking easily and still feel unmoved by it.
The needs fare no better. The IEE's Suggestive Si is the IEI's Role Si, and the IEI's Suggestive Se is the IEE's Role Se. The IEI can offer the IEE some comfort and practical care, and the IEE can offer the IEI some push and decisiveness, but both only with effort and for short periods. Their Vulnerable functions sit in each other's Mobilising: the IEE's Vulnerable Ti is the IEI's Mobilising Ti and the IEI's Vulnerable Te is the IEE's Mobilising Te, so neither is well placed to shield the other from logical criticism or practical demands.
Two intuitive, people-oriented types with the same gaps can drift together into the same difficulties. The pair tends to stay on good terms when each keeps their own practical support elsewhere and treats the other as a thoughtful companion rather than a rescuer.
How this Extinguishment plays out
The intuition-leading Extinguishment pair across Beta-Delta produces a specific quality of mind. The IEE leads with possibility-spotting in people (Ne) backed by moral perception (Fi); the IEI leads with temporal trajectory-perception (Ni) backed by atmospheric warmth (Fe). Both are intuition-leading, both think laterally about people, both prefer the contemplative or developmental mode to the strictly operational. The opening conversation has a quality of compatible interiority: two minds that move in similar territory.
What appears over sustained contact is the systematic inversion of every function letter. The IEE's outward-possibility intuition is inverted by the IEI's inward-trajectory intuition; the IEE's inward-moral feeling is inverted by the IEI's outward-atmospheric feeling. What each partner reads in the other tracks at the level of vocabulary but rarely at the level of judgement. The Beta-Delta quadra opposition compounds this: developmental possibility in Delta and atmospheric mission in Beta are hard to translate into each other, even when expressed in similar terms.
Recognisable settings: certain creative and pastoral partnerships in which one figure handles developmental possibility and the other handles atmospheric significance, occasional friendships that sustain on mutual intellectual recognition without becoming genuinely close, family configurations producing children who feel both parents are interior in different and contradictory ways. The pair functions in defined complementary roles with clear separation and tends to become tiring at sustained close range. Beta-Delta intuitive Extinguishment runs substantive and quietly tiring.
