Both are intuitive types who are drawn to the inner lives of people and the non-obvious dimension of situations. Ne generates outward — possibilities, connections, enthusiasm for what could be discovered. Ni works inward — depth, emotional trajectories, patience with what is slowly becoming visible. Each is the other's weakest position.
The Extinguishment relation
Extinguishment pairs share the same information element dimension — both are intuitive types oriented toward people — but with opposite extraversion–introversion orientations on the leading function. The IEE's outward enthusiasm and rapid generation of interpersonal possibilities does not land for the IEI as warmth or depth; it registers as a pace that bypasses the interior dimension the IEI most values. The IEI's inward emotional depth and careful attunement does not land for the IEE as real connection; it registers as a closed quality — present but not reaching the shared exploratory space the IEE needs.

The IEI can find the IEE's outward pace and enthusiasm somewhat overwhelming — genuine in its warmth but not providing the quality of still, interior resonance the IEI finds most nourishing.
Both types are among the most people-oriented in the system; the Extinguishment friction arises not from indifference but from a fundamental mismatch in which direction that orientation flows. The pairing tends to be cordial and often warm at social distance while producing a specific mutual flatness in sustained close contact.
How this Extinguishment plays out
The intuition-leading Extinguishment pair across Beta-Delta produces a specific quality of mind. The IEE leads with possibility-spotting in people (Ne) backed by moral perception (Fi); the IEI leads with temporal trajectory-perception (Ni) backed by atmospheric warmth (Fe). Both are intuition-leading, both think laterally about people, both prefer the contemplative or developmental mode to the strictly operational. The opening conversation has a quality of compatible interiority — two minds that move in similar territory.
What appears over sustained contact is the systematic inversion of every function letter.
