SEE at Work: The Ambassador's Career Strengths

SEEs are often described at work as natural salespeople, and that undersells them. What an SEE does well is read who has influence, decide who is worth backing, and then move a situation until it favours their side. Selling is one use of that; negotiating, advocating and running a crisis are others.

Where SEE sits among the Socials

SEE is the Gamma irrational of the Social club, the Ethics and Sensing club. Gamma values give them a taste for competition, frank dealing and results that can be seen, and irrationality means they respond to a situation as it develops.

The top of the stack explains the rest. The SEE's Enthusiastic Driver is Tactical Action (Se): the sense of where power, resources and leverage lie, and the will to use them. Ethical Harmony (Fi) is their Adventurous Discoverer, the reading of personal loyalty: who is with them, who is wavering, who is owed a favour. An SEE therefore asks what can be done here and now, and then who they are doing it for.

The Social club, through SEE's eyes

The Social club handles emotional atmosphere, people's physical needs and relationships between people in detail, and logical concepts, time and risk, and people's abilities and potential only on the surface. The SEE works the same list with different tools.

Relationships between people are where the SEE is most precise. Fi tracks each bond separately, and Se adds an eye for what each bond can do: the SEE knows which colleague can open which door. Physical needs they meet as provision rather than comfort. Dynamic Stabilisation (Si), the element of bodily ease, is their Ignoring function, so the SEE cares less whether the chairs are comfortable than whether their people have the pay and equipment they are entitled to, and will go and get it. Emotional atmosphere they can create at will. Social Interest (Fe) is their Natural Artisan, the Demonstrative position: the SEE can fill a room with energy when it serves a purpose, usually to move people towards a goal.

On the surface list, logical theory bores or unsettles them, and a person's potential interests them less than what that person can do today.

How SEE works

Kovalenko and Zvonaryova set out five work groups. Each is taken below with the SEE's positions as the lens.

Stress and switching: Viscous

People who have watched an SEE push through a hard week are often surprised to find SEE in the Viscous group, alongside SEI, ILE and ILI. The surprise comes from watching the pushing and not the aftermath. Tactical Action (Se) meets each pressure head on. What builds up is the weight of what they are holding. An SEE commits to people and to positions, and every commitment is something to defend. When too many come under threat at once, the SEE does not recover by pushing harder. They recover through their own people, the colleagues Ethical Harmony (Fi) has marked as theirs, and an SEE isolated at work has no way to reset.

The group also describes how quickly an idea sets. An SEE turns an opening into a campaign within a day, with roles assigned and targets named, and can drop it just as fast, or reuse it whole for the next opening whether it fits or not.

Implementation: Finisher

What does an SEE finish? Rarely a document. It is usually a deal, a campaign or a client: one piece of work with an outcome everyone can see. The authors class SEE as a Finisher, with SEI, EIE and EII, and in the SEE the group's focus on one piece of work shows up as tenacity. Their methods are tactics they have tried in person, tailored to the individual across the table: Fi reads what this client needs to feel, and Se decides what to offer and when. Practical Results (Te) is their Hidden Motivator, the Mobilising position, so an efficient process supplied by someone else helps an SEE finish faster.

Planning: Variant

The SEE rarely has one plan. They have three or four, each tied to a different goal or ally, and they shift their weight between them as the situation moves. SEE shares the Variant planning group with SLE, IEI and ILI. The switching is Se's work: the SEE reads a change in the balance of forces and acts before others have noticed. The forethought is less their own. Reality Distillation (Ni), the element of timing and of where events are heading, is their Subdued Dreamer, the Suggestive position. They plan better with a colleague who can tell them where things are heading and when to move.

Decision style: Diplomat

SEE decides as a Diplomat, though not a quiet one. Their ethical judgements are mostly about loyalty: who has kept faith and who has let the side down. Those judgements bend to the situation, because Se is always weighing what can be achieved, and the SEE will make a deal with a rival today if it protects their people tomorrow. Academic Knowledge (Ti) is their Rising Guru, the most vulnerable position, so a decision that must be justified by formal rules or an abstract principle leaves them exposed. An SEE told "that is not how the process works" hears an obstacle, not an argument.

Goal-setting: Flexible-manoeuvring

An SEE's goals are many, and they all point outward: a promotion, a new client, a better deal for the team, a rival to beat. The authors name the EP temperament's way of setting goals flexible-manoeuvring, and the SEE fits it closely, switching sharply when a better goal appears or the current one turns difficult. Of those two reasons, the SEE is moved more by the first: a bigger opportunity pulls them off a smaller one before it is done. That suits a fast market; on a long project, someone else needs to own the last stretch.

Same field, different dynamic

Every Social processes mood, provision and relationships in detail. The SEE's version is the most competitive of the four.

ESE: Quasi-identity

The ESE and the SEE are the club's two extraverts and are sometimes mistaken for each other. The ESE leads with Social Interest (Fe), which is the SEE's Natural Artisan, and backs it with Dynamic Stabilisation (Si), the SEE's Ignoring function. So the ESE works on the whole group's mood and comfort, and the SEE on particular loyalties and on getting results for them. Rational, a Stable planner, an Implementer and a Guardian, the ESE shares no work group with the SEE.

Between them the relation is Quasi-identity, which Kovalenko and Zvonaryova give the natural task of fighting external circumstances and getting through crises. Against a common outside problem the SEE handles the negotiation, and the ESE looks after the people who will live with its result. Without one, the SEE can find the ESE's even-handed warmth naive, and the ESE can find the SEE's favourites unfair. See the ESE careers page.

SEI: Extinguishment

Leading elements separate these two before anything else does. The SEI leads with Dynamic Stabilisation (Si), the SEE's Ignoring function, so where the SEE takes charge of a situation, the SEI makes it comfortable. Beneath that, they work in much the same way. Both are irrational, and they share three work groups: Viscous, Finisher and Diplomat. The SEI keeps few fixed plans at all, where the SEE runs several at once.

They stand in Extinguishment, whose natural task, keeping motivation and interest in each other, takes effort here. Similar methods and different drives mean each can quietly flatten the other: the SEE's campaigns can feel to the SEI like noise, and the SEI's patient improvements can feel to the SEE like standing still. Taking a deliberate interest in the other's work is the remedy. See the SEI careers page.

ESI: Mirror

The ESI holds the SEE's two strong elements in the opposite order: Ethical Harmony (Fi) leading, Tactical Action (Se) second. The SEE acts and then asks whose side the action serves; the ESI decides who deserves support and then acts to protect them. A rational Staged planner who implements as an Implementer and decides as a Guardian, the ESI shares no work group with the SEE.

In a Mirror relation the natural task is constructive criticism and getting out of a creative rut. The ESI tells the SEE plainly when a tactic has crossed a line; the SEE shows the ESI when a principled stand has hardened into a position nobody can move them from. See the ESI careers page.

What drains SEE at work

Academic Knowledge (Ti) is the SEE's Rising Guru, and it accounts for most of their frustration at work. Procedures that exist for their own sake, rules applied without regard to the case, and being asked to justify an obvious decision in abstract terms all land on the SEE's most vulnerable position. They often respond by pushing through the rule, which works until it does not.

Creative Thinking (Ne) is their Underlying Referee, the Role position. Joining a brainstorm or speculating about what a new market might become is within their range, but they tire of it quickly.

The club's surface list adds developing logical concepts, managing time and risk, and seeing people's abilities and potential. Roles built around theory or risk analysis draw on what they take in only lightly.

What SEE needs from colleagues

The Suggestive position is where the SEE gains most from someone else, and for them it holds Reality Distillation (Ni): a calm sense of where things are heading, when to act and when to wait. A colleague who can say "not yet" and explain why, without trying to take control, saves an SEE from their own momentum. The Mobilising position holds Practical Results (Te): accurate facts, sensible procedures, a system that simply works.

The SEE's Dual, ILI, leads with both. On a team that is often the quiet colleague who sees three moves ahead, while the SEE carries the plan into the world. The SEE relationships page goes further into the pairing.

Fields that tend to suit SEE

The Social club's fields are social care, service industries, communication and building contacts, and medicine. The SEE's stack pulls them towards the part of each where someone has to win something for someone. Communication and building contacts is the most direct fit: negotiating, developing new business, representing an organisation to the people who matter to it. In service industries it means running the operation and the team rather than serving. In social care it means advocacy, taking on a system on a client's behalf. Medicine suits them at the fast, hands-on end, where decisions are made on the spot.

The caution is anything where the job is mostly theory or procedure. An SEE in a policy unit or an audit function is spending the day on their Rising Guru.

Read that as a talent to be used, not a job list. An SEE can bring it to engineering, law or teaching as readily as to sales: anywhere someone needs to see who holds influence, take a position and move people towards it. What decides the fit is whether the role lets them use it.

The club work profile and the five work groups on this page are from R.K. Kovalenko and N.A. Zvonaryova, Sotsionika: polnyy kurs lektsiy [Socionics: A Complete Lecture Course], NITs Sotsionicheskogo Analiza / SibAK, Novosibirsk, 2020, chapter 11; the natural task of each relation is from chapter 12 of the same book. The authors base the stress and implementation groups on their own experiments. The reading of each group through SEE's Model A positions, and the examples, are my own.
