The SLE-ESTp Marshal is the IEI-INFp Romantic's dual — a type defined by leading Extroverted Sensing, producing an immediate, commanding physical presence and a real-time responsiveness to the environment that other types find difficult to match. The SLE does not plan in the conventional sense; they read the situation as it exists and dominate it. Dave Lister from Red Dwarf is an unusual portrait of this type — one that strips the Marshal orientation of its usual trappings and shows what remains.
Dave Lister — Red Dwarf
Lister is the last human alive, marooned three million years from Earth on a mining vessel with a hologram, an evolved cat, and a neurotic android. The situation objectively warrants despair. Lister's response is to keep going — not through heroic resolve, but through a baseline refusal to be destabilised that is characteristic of the SLE's leading function. Extroverted Sensing produces a type that is anchored in the immediate reality of what is in front of them. The abstract horror of the situation does not reach Lister the way it might reach other types, because he is constitutionally oriented toward the concrete present rather than the existential implications.
His communication style is firm — direct, no-nonsense, and largely stripped of social performance. He says what he thinks, often bluntly, and does not adjust it for the comfort of his audience. This is the SLE's characteristic register: not hostility, but a preference for dealing with reality as it is rather than managing how that reality is perceived.
His erotic attitude is aggressor in the Socionics sense — assertive in the pursuit of what he wants, with a low tolerance for the kind of equivocation and system-following that his companion Rimmer exemplifies. The SLE's aggressor attitude produces a type that does not wait for permission or consensus. Lister decides what needs doing and does it, and the institutional framework of the Jupiter Mining Corporation — what remains of it — is entirely irrelevant to this calculus.
The secondary function, Introverted Logic, gives the SLE a practical intelligence for how things actually work — not theory, but mechanism. Lister is not an intellectual, but he is consistently effective in a crisis. His solutions are inelegant and often chaotic in appearance, but they function. The gap between how his approach looks and what it produces is a recurring comic engine of the show.
The fourth function — the PoLR, or point of least resistance — for the SLE is Introverted Ethics: the function concerned with personal values, internal moral conviction, and the depth of relational fidelity expressed through genuine ethical commitment rather than through action or loyalty-by-habit. Lister cares about his crewmates — that is not in question. But he cannot easily access or articulate what he values at the level of personal ethics, what his deepest commitments are, or what he owes others in a moral sense that goes beyond practical solidarity. His warmth is real; its ethical roots are inaccessible to him. The comedy and pathos of the series both live in this gap: the character most committed to getting home to the person he loves, who has the least capacity to understand what love actually requires of him.
