Why IEI
Cobain's songwriting works differently from most rock writing. The lyrics are not primarily narrative or argumentative — they are atmospheric. Phrases collide without obvious logic; images appear and dissolve; the emotional texture is everything and the surface meaning is almost deliberately obscured. This is the IEI's Reality Distillation (Ni) as a creative method: accessing interior states directly and transmitting them without translation. The compression is the point. What cannot be said precisely is instead suggested with maximum intensity.
What distinguished Nirvana from the other Seattle bands was not the noise or the aggression — it was the melody underneath. Cobain's songs are almost always built around a hook so pure it borders on the childlike, then surrounded by distortion and dissonance that seem designed to protect or ironise it. This tension — between the vulnerable melodic core and the abrasive exterior — is among the most consistently IEI things in twentieth-century popular music.
His relationship with fame was not tortured in the conventional rock-star sense. It was specifically the performance of a self — the pressure to be publicly legible as a particular kind of person — that he found intolerable. The IEI has a rich and detailed interior life that is not available for public consumption; the expectation that it should be available, that the audience's desire to know the real person is a legitimate claim, was an experience he described repeatedly as violation rather than flattery.
The creative relationship with Courtney Love — which he described as the most significant of his life — has a structural quality that is recognisable. A charismatic, assertive, boundary-testing partner who provided the external engagement that the IEI tends to avoid for itself. Whether this was good for him or not is complicated; that it fit a type-consistent pattern is clear.
