Why IEI
Scully is one of the most precisely typed characters in television history, and what makes Anderson's performance so effective is that she brought the IEI interior to a character written as something else. Scully is written as the rational counterweight to Mulder's intuition — the empiricist against the believer. Anderson played her as a person with an intensely private interior life who has elected to process that life through the framework of science. The gap between what Scully shows and what she feels became the engine of the character's compelling quality across nine seasons.
This quality — the rich interior behind the controlled exterior — is the IEI's signature. Anderson has described her own experience of performance as one of interior access: getting to the emotional state and then deciding how much of it to show, rather than performing the state for the camera. The IEI's Ni leading function generates an inner world that is more detailed and more continuous than the outer world, and what makes for great performance is the management of the threshold between them.
Her career choices reflect the IEI's characteristic restlessness with settled conditions. She has moved between America and Britain multiple times, taken roles in dramatically different genres — The Fall, Sex Education, The Crown — and consistently sought material that required her to inhabit a different interior logic with each project. The IEI does not find mastery of a solved problem satisfying; it finds the next unsolved one.
Her public engagement with mental health, with the experience of depression and with the IEI's particular relationship with the interior life has been unusually candid. She has written and spoken about states that most people in her position would manage rather than disclose. This willingness to make the interior visible — selectively, purposefully — is itself very IEI: the depth is real, and occasionally she decides the right thing is to let it be seen.
