Why SEE
Elvis is the SEE in its most elemental form: physical command of a room, an immediate and irresistible presence that operates on the audience before they have processed what they are seeing. The 1968 Comeback Special is the definitive document — stripped of the Hollywood nonsense, back in a small venue with a live audience, and the power is immediate. This is Se doing exactly what Se does: taking the physical and social field and owning it completely, without visible effort.
The Fi shows in the directness of his emotional expression. Elvis didn't perform sadness or joy — he inhabited them. The gospel recordings are perhaps the clearest evidence: there is no distance between the singer and the feeling, no mediating layer of craft that separates expression from experience. This is Fi's quality — the emotional reality is internal and it comes directly out, without the Fe speaker's concern for the audience's response.
What is interesting about Elvis is the gap between the Se command of the performance space and the Fi vulnerability in the private sphere. The documented difficulty with confrontation, the inability to dismiss the people around him who were not serving him well, the retreat into controlled environments: these are the shadow of Fi's strength. The same interiority that produced the emotional directness of the music made the real-world social navigation genuinely costly.
The cultural impact is a pure Se phenomenon. Elvis didn't describe a revolution — he embodied one. The physical fact of his performance, the way he moved, the sound he produced: these changed what was possible for people who saw them. Se works on the field directly, without argument.
